PROLOGUE

The scent of blood and magic were ripe in the air.

He looked at the five dead bodies with incredulity, ignoring the wheezing breathing of the mutilated sole survivor.

The fae had been almost powerless. How had he been able to recover part of his magic and cut down through shifted lycans like wheat?

He didn’t know.

Didn’t care.

His stomach dropped to the floor at the sight of his dead mate.

Decapitated, the wound partially cauterized with magic.

Dead.

Irreparably gone.

He knew he was screaming; the agony lancing through his heart a million times worse than the ache in his head.

Gone, his mate was gone.

It took him minutes to recover.

He barely noticed his minions retrieving the bodies and preparing to light the whole place on fire before the humans arrived.

The vampire bitch and the fae had killed his lover.

He’d known the fae was powerful, but not this much. And even though the vampiress had seemed like a scared kitten at first, she was stronger, more powerful than most purebloods. Beyond his league.

Later, he urged himself, he could fall apart later. First, he had to claim his vengeance.

Sniffing, he followed the scent of heady, rich blood to a pool of a few liters close to his dead mate.

The vampiress’s blood.

She wasn’t dead. He knew this.

There wasn’t a body left behind, and considering her might, she could only be killed through full decapitation and immolation.

With trembling fingers, he extracted a syringe, retrieving some of the coagulating, crimson blood.

A few drops would suffice, but he preferred to have enough.

He wasn’t a match for her or the fae.

But he knew who was.

He knew how to convince his dark associate to go after those who’d taken everything away from him.

A sacrifice would be needed, but he was willing to pay.

He’d always been.

Johan placed a pale hand on his dead lover’s cheek. “I will avenge you, I swear.”
